Most mats used for custom picture frames are made from acid-free or conservation papers. Mass-produced, commercial mats tend to be made from bleached-white, acid-neutral cellulose composites.
  • Picture framers cut mats with matcutters. An experienced operator may use a matcutter to cut windows, recesses, slots or cut-outs to show the whole or selected parts of an image. Matcutting may be effected to cut one, two, three or more coloured boards so as to show and highlight the different bands of colours. Only straight cuts may be made with these machines. Round or oval cuts and openings are made using different matcutters or by hand by skilled, specialist, mat carvers.
